2-Player Co-op Difficulty Scaling Explained
Duo is the hardest player count: enemy HP scales well above 2x while attack numbers stay near solo values and hit both of you. Shared Weak, Vulnerable, and Strength-down are your real second damage source.
Core goal: survive Act 1-2 elite and boss HP walls by treating shared Weak, Vulnerable, and Strength-down as your real second damage source - not by each playing a solo aggro deck.
What Actually Scales
- 1HP multiplies well above 2x
in many rooms (reports around 2.2x in Act 1, higher later). Fights last longer, so chip and multi-hit elites punish you.
- 2Enemy attack numbers often do not double.
Block and Weak therefore punch above their solo weight.
- 3Debuffs are shared.
If one of you applies Vulnerable, both of you deal more. This is the most-cited reason coordinated duos beat uncoordinated ones.
- 4Some elite buffs scale extra-nasty in 2P
(block-on-hit shells, stack-building enemies). These are the run-killers if you try to race them with raw Strikes.
- 5One death is not a wipe.
The survivor can finish the fight and the downed player comes back at 1 HP. Do not both greed.
1Pick a Pair That Applies Weak and Vulnerable Early
- 1Highest-praise duo: Ironclad + Silent.
Ironclad tanks and Strength-scales; Silent keeps Weak, Poison, and Vulnerable up so both decks hit harder.
- 2Avoid two scaling specialists
who never find a debuff - some Defect + Necrobinder pairings get called low win-rate when neither drafts control.
- 3Same character twice is fine
if you both draft into shared debuffs (double Necrobinder is a low-comms synergy).
2Draft for the Other Person
- 1First three hallway fights:
take any extra attack or AoE over extra Defends. Act 1 2P elites punish starter decks harder than solo.
- 2Priority cards:
Weak, Vulnerable, Strength-down, multi-hit, cheap AoE. One player runs debuff uptime, the other runs payoff.
- 3Do not both race identical aggro.
Two half-finished damage decks lose the HP race; one control plus one damage usually does not.
3Call Out Turn Order, Not Just "I Have Damage"
- 1"Vuln going out - wait."
Simultaneous turns mean you can dump damage before the debuff lands.
- 2"I am blocking the big hit, you dump."
- 3"Focus left / kill the buffer first."
Players who skip callouts describe the same hallway fight as impossible; players who do it describe 2P as easier than solo.
4Path Like You Are Poorer Than in Solo
- 1Act 1 elites are the wall.
Skip the first elite unless you already have a potion plus a real damage card plus some Weak or Vuln.
- 2Prefer a campfire or shop before the first elite.
- 3Act 2 is where 2P HP really shows.
If both decks are still starter-plus-two-cards, take hallways, not back-to-back elites.
- 4Vote the map together.
Do not split-brain into an elite gauntlet.
5Combat Rules That Save Runs
- 1Keep Weak on the enemy almost every turn.
Incoming damage ends 2P runs, not the lack of a 40-damage turn.
- 2Focus-fire.
Multi-enemy elites punish split targeting because scaled HP means you do not clean the board in time.
- 3Potions can be thrown at your partner.
Use that for energy, draw, and smooth turns - not just self-heal.
- 4If one of you is at 1 HP after a revive,
the other must block for the team. Do not both go lethal.
6Relics, Shops, and Ascension
- 1Draft relics by role:
offense to the damage dealer, sustain and block to the tank. Do not both grab the same shiny Strength relic.
- 2Brimstone warning:
it gives you Strength and enemies Strength - teammates will hate you if you slam it without a plan.
- 3Multiplayer Ascension is a separate ladder.
The run is capped by the lowest MP Ascension in the party. Climbing 2P A9/A10 is widely called the peak difficulty of the game. Do not queue A10 just because you cleared it solo.
Decision Points
| Situation | Take this | Skip this |
|---|---|---|
| First elite incoming, decks still thin | Hallway / campfire / shop | Elite "for the relic" |
| One has Weak/Vuln, other has payoff | Debuff first, then dump | Both dump at once |
| Multi-enemy elite | Kill the buffer/applier first | Split damage 50/50 |
| Partner at 1 HP after revive | You become the blocker | Both go lethal |
| Shop has shared-benefit vs selfish infinite | Shared-benefit | Your highlight-reel card |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Playing two independent solo decks and wondering why HP feels like 3x.
- Ignoring Weak uptime because "we have damage."
- Taking Act 1 elites on starter decks.
- Ending turns at different times or dumping before the partner's Vulnerable.
- Treating a downed partner as a wipe instead of a 1-HP extra body next fight.
- Assuming 2P is "solo but safer." Uncoordinated 2P is harder than solo; coordinated 2P can be easier.
