NBA 2K27 City Quit Penalty for Matches That Never Started
Leaving a City lobby that is still searching can still register as a quit. Here is the lock-in line that makes leaving safe, the dashboard workaround, and how to fight a stacked 120-minute ban.
Core problem: backing out of a City lobby that is still searching for an opponent (match never found, game never started) can register as a quit and trigger a sportsmanship warning or timeout. 2K marked that specific bug resolved on September 8, but a related issue still exists for leaving private Crew Squad Showdown games, and disconnects can stack the same penalty.
1Do This in Order
- 1Confirm you are on a current build.
Install the latest City stability patches. The lobby-search penalty was the issue 2K called resolved September 8. If you have not updated since early September, update first.
- 2Learn the lock-in line.
Safer: still filling a squad or "searching / waiting for opponent" and you leave before a match is found. Not safe: "opponent found," the walk-out animation, loading onto the court, or mid-game. That is treated as quitting a match.
- 3If you must leave during search, do not use the in-game Quit button.
Players still getting hit report the in-game leave during search, or a freeze/error, counting as a quit. On console use Close Application or dashboard out before opponent found; on PC fully close the client, then relaunch and walk back into The City.
- 4After a finished game, leave only when the exit prompt appears.
A common complaint: game over, leave Theater or Rec, timeout anyway. Wait for the explicit leave option. If it never appears, close the app from the dashboard instead of mashing quit.
- 5Treat every timeout as a stack.
First hits are short (warning or ~15-30 min). Repeat hits jump to 60 then 120. A disconnect plus a kick from the next game can upgrade the ban in one session. Wait the timer out; do not keep queueing.
- 6If the ban is over ~30 minutes and you never entered a game, ticket it.
Screenshot the timeout message and the lobby still showing "searching" if you have it. Contact 2K Support for a manual review. Signing out of the platform account, back in, and relaunching is the first thing players try before a ticket.
- 7Crew HQ exception.
Leaving private Crew Squad Showdown can still give a sportsmanship warning as of mid-September. Until 2K marks that resolved, assume private Crew games are not safe to walk out of.
Key Decisions
| Situation | Choice |
|---|---|
| Still searching, no opponent found | Close the app from the dashboard, or wait for the official leave option if it appears. |
| Opponent found / loading in | Stay. Leaving here is a real quit. |
| Game over, no exit button | Close the app. Do not spam in-game quit. |
| Private Crew Showdown | Stay, or accept a possible warning. |
| 15-30 min timeout | Wait it out. Do not queue again. |
| 60-120 min and you never entered a game | Ticket plus screenshots. |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using in-game Leave the instant matchmaking feels slow. That was the exact false-quit case.
- Dashboarding after "opponent found." That is a real quit.
- Queueing again immediately after a warning. The next disconnect upgrades the ban.
- Assuming Park duos, Theater 1v1, or the Rec locker room are exempt. Players reported false quits in all of those.
- Calling every timeout the "never started" bug. Real mid-game quits and leftover Crew issues still exist.
