Welcome to Elderfield: Cozy Mode vs Old Gods Combat
What each mode actually changes, what stays identical on both, the day-one survival checklist, and when to switch difficulty mid-save.
Core answer: story, town, farming, mysteries, and atmosphere stay the same on both modes. The split is how hard combat, mining interruptions, sleep and bath tradeoffs, and Old God pressure hit you. Cozy cuts combat pressure hard while keeping the full narrative; Old Gods is the design the game is built around, where rest has a cost and fleeing is a real action.
1Pick the Mode That Matches Your Problem
- 1Choose Cozy if
you came for farming, fishing, gifts, decorating, and weird NPCs; turn-based fights make you tense; or you hate getting jumped while mining and chopping. Curses and blessings become flavor more than a punishment loop. Players on Cozy barely noticed them and even stacked five curses on day one for an achievement.
- 2Choose Old Gods if
you want the mall, mines, and woods to feel dangerous; you like managing AP, items, rituals, and a die-farm-retry loop; or you want Sunday church alignment and combat blessings to actually matter.
- 3Unsure? Start Normal.
Many players start Normal, then drop to Cozy if mining fights or early mall runs feel like busywork, or bump up once they have gear. Difficulty can be changed mid-save.
2Do This on Day 1 Either Way
- 1Set weapons in your equipment before you mine, chop, or sleep.
Combat can fire from mining, chopping, and sleep, not just walking into an enemy. Players keep getting jumped under-geared.
- 2Loot every bin, shelf, and box on a "lucky" day.
Early equipment and food from town searching is what carries the first mall and mine fights.
- 3Treat flee as a real button.
Combat is turn-based AP: attack, heal, buff, debuff, or run are all valid spends. If a fight is eating your stack, leave.
- 4Know the bath vs sleep trade.
Bath heals HP and MP and clears most curses, but respawns monsters and resets some world state. Sleep can lift a curse or slap a new one on you. Plan around that instead of treating bed like Stardew.
- 5Go to church on Sunday and pick an Old God.
Alignment is a weekly combat and farming buff, not just lore. Players report a tough boss becoming doable after sticking with Kaal. Community picks: Kaal for survival and mixed damage, Nezroth for physical tank, Hagroth for farm and gather, Valtris for ritual damage. You can rethink next Sunday.
Decision Points After the First Week
| You Are Feeling | Do This |
|---|---|
| Mining and chopping keep starting fights and you are broke | Drop to Cozy, or only mine when stocked with heals and a weapon equipped. |
| Fights are boring and you want the horror half to bite | Move to Old Gods or a harder setting; stop fleeing every random and start cooking combat food. |
| Curses feel like noise | You are on Cozy. Fine. Ignore them or take a bath when the text piles up. |
| One boss walls you | Sunday Kaal (or the god matching the damage type), then restock heals before the mall. |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Starting Old Gods because "that's the real game," then bouncing off when early resource nodes keep spawning fights before you have food or gear. A known early-game rough edge.
- Assuming Cozy deletes combat or story. It does not. You still fight; it just stops being the main tax.
- Sleeping on cooldown like a normal farm sim, then wondering why the night cursed you.
- Bathing after a clean dungeon clear, then wondering why everything respawned.
- Skipping Sunday church, then wondering why a later fight feels unfair.
- Walking into the mall or mines without a weapon in the equipment slots.
