Core goal: Let a friend or family member (especially someone on original Switch, Switch Lite, or OLED) join you in Pokémon Pokopia without buying the game. GameShare only works in Palette Town and the visitor is limited. This is the number one complaint and the thing people keep getting wrong.

1Unlock Palette Town First

You cannot GameShare anywhere else. Players who try Link Play at the first Pokémon Center get stuck because GameShare is missing.

2Host Steps (Switch 2 That Owns the Game)

Stay in Palette Town. The host stays locked in Palette Town while sharing.

3Guest Steps (Person Who Does Not Own the Game)

Both systems should be on the latest system software. Guest play only lasts for that session. When the host ends it, the guest cannot keep playing.

Key Decision: Local vs Online

SituationWhat to Use
Same room plus Switch 1 guestUse nearby or local. This is the case most families actually use.
Distant friend on Switch 2GameChat.
Want to visit Cloud Island or story islandsNot possible via GameShare. Community consensus is GameShare is Palette Town only.

4What the Visitor Can and Cannot Do

Can: Walk around Palette Town, use abilities the host has already learned (except some like Magnet Rise), smash and cut trees and materials, pick up and place dropped items and blocks, interact with some Pokémon, eat food the host drops.
Cannot: Craft or use the workbench, use the PC or storage, keep a personal inventory across sessions (items go to the host's Lost and Found), discover traces or habitats the normal way, change appearance much, follow Pokémon the same way, leave Palette Town, or play the story.
Treat it as a short sandbox visit or demo, not full co-op. Hosts who drop materials and let the guest place and build around them get better sessions than hosts who expect the guest to play independently.
