Whirling Assault Smith of Kitava Build Guide
Spin through packs and trigger Detonate Dead explosions via Fire Spell on Hit + Herald of Ash. SSF-friendly Warrior league starter with solid bossing through Tempest Bell combos and a smooth Act 4 skill swap. No uniques required.

Core Mechanic
Spin to Win: Whirling Assault hits multiple enemies as you spin through packs. Fire Spell on Hit triggers Detonate Dead on each hit, creating corpse explosions. Herald of Ash chains ignite across the whole screen from those explosions. For bosses: drop Tempest Bell, then Whirling through it repeatedly to amplify damage. The build "comes online" at the Act 4 skill swap (~Level 41).

Campaign Leveling Steps
1
Early Campaign (Acts 1-3) - Leveling Skill
Whirling Assault not available yet
- Level with Glacial Cascade for smooth, safe play (best default)
- Alternative: Twisters with a weapon swap for faster clears if you want speed
- Focus on attribute nodes to hit gem requirements early
- Attribute formula: (Max Attribute Needed - Other Sources) / 5 = passive nodes required, round up
- Gear: prioritize life, resistances, and flat physical damage throughout
2
Act 4 Swap - Whirling Assault Online (~Level 41)
The build comes online here
- Equip a quarterstaff with flat physical damage or +melee skill levels
- Link Whirling Assault with: Armour Break, Ancestral Call, Heft, Heavy Swing
- Add Tempest Bell for boss encounters
Pack Clear
→Whirling Assault through the pack - hits trigger Fire Spell on Hit
→Detonate Dead fires on each hit - corpse chain explosions
→Herald of Ash ignites spread across the whole screen
Boss
→Drop Tempest Bell near the boss
→Whirling Assault through the bell repeatedly to amplify DPS
→Do not spin past the bell - position to keep hitting it

3
Post-Campaign to Maps - Mid Scaling
Gear priorities and node clusters
- Gear priorities: life, resistances, +melee skill levels, movement speed on rares
- Stack Surrounded clusters for damage and AoE increase
- Use Constricting Command helm to always trigger "surrounded" with 4 fewer enemies needed
- Scale Rage for Berserk activation - key for sustained DPS
- Ensure Fire Spell on Hit is active for Detonate Dead and Herald of Ash clear to work
4
Endgame Scaling (Level 75+)
Crit version and leech optimization
- Transition to crit version - focus on crit chance and crit multiplier
- Add multiple leech % rolls on tree and gear - 0.5 nerfed leech, one roll is no longer enough to offset Berserk drain
- Use Blood Magic setups where impactful for sustained Berserk uptime
- Target: T16 Abysses and Simulacrums - the build's AoE excels in density
- Prioritize +skill levels, then crit, then defenses for loot filter order

Key Decision Points
Glacial Cascade or Twisters for leveling?
Glacial Cascade is the default - smoother, no weapon swap needed, safe throughout Acts 1-3. Use Twisters with a weapon swap only if you want faster pack clears and are comfortable managing the swap.
How much leech do I need for Berserk?
More than pre-0.5. One leech roll used to be enough - after the patch, add at least 2-3 leech % rolls across tree and gear to offset Berserk's life drain in longer fights and boss encounters.
Should I use splash / Tribal Fury in 0.5?
Skip or deprioritize splash. The 0.5 patch limits "one splash per damaging area" - Whirling creates multiple hit areas. Pack clear comes from Detonate Dead + Herald of Ash explosions anyway, not from splash alone. Test in practice league before committing points.
Why Smith of Kitava over Monk options?
Smith of Kitava is SSF-viable and consistent. It amplifies Fire Spell on Hit, melee synergies, and provides solid defenses without requiring specific uniques. Some community debate exists about swapping to Monk ascendancies, but Smith reliably carries this setup through endgame.
03
Common Mistakes
Ignoring attribute requirements early
Missing attribute thresholds locks you out of gems and gear in Acts 2-3. Use the formula early and path to attribute nodes before the requirements hit.
Relying on splash for clear instead of explosions
After 0.5's splash changes, pack clear depends on Detonate Dead and Herald of Ash chain explosions. Not having Fire Spell on Hit active means you lose the entire clear mechanic.
Under-scaling leech for Berserk
Berserk drains life continuously. In longer boss fights or sustained map clear, one leech roll post-0.5 will not sustain you. Add more before endgame content.
Spinning past Tempest Bell on bosses
Tempest Bell amplifies damage when you hit through it with Whirling Assault. Spinning past it without hitting it wastes the entire boss DPS window. Position carefully.
Chasing uniques instead of life/resist rares in SSF
The build is fully self-found viable. Spending time hunting specific uniques early instead of using life + resist rares will stall campaign progress.
