Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5 Build Guide

PoE2 Return of the Ancients - Storm Wave Invoker Monk Nuke Build

One-button map clear with near-100% crit and massive AoE explosions. Flicker Strike for boss one-shots. Full setup: skill links, gear priorities, charge rotation, and defenses.

Invoker Ascendancy Storm Wave + Flicker Strike ~100% crit target 9k+ ES target T4 pinnacle capable
What this build does: Spam Storm Wave in maps for near-screen-wide clear via crit, fissures, and herald explosions. Weapon swap to Flicker Strike for bosses and one-tap T4 pinnacles. ES recharge sustain keeps you alive without flasking constantly.

Step-by-Step Build Guide

1

Campaign to Early Maps - Build Foundation

  • Take Invoker Ascendancy. Stack lightning and crit nodes on the passive tree.
  • Level with Quarterstaff Strike or Tempest Flurry, transition to Storm Wave as soon as available.
  • Add Herald of Thunder for clear. Upgrade gems every other level.
  • Farm staves for: phys/ele damage on attacks, attack speed, crit chance.
  • Anoint Stormcharged early.

Why Builds the lightning crit foundation while carrying through campaign without gear dependence.

2

Mapping Setup - The 1-Button Nuke

Storm Wave Supports
  • Lightning Infusion
  • Martial Tempo
  • Upheaval (AoE / shotgunning)
  • Branching Fissures II (extra waves)
  • Pinpoint Critical (crit chance)
Heralds + Charges
  • Herald of Ash (explosions)
  • Herald of Thunder (shocks)
  • Charged Staff with Persistence/Perpetual Charge
  • Profane Ritual + Cast on Critical for auto power charges

Spam Storm Wave. Crits trigger Branching Fissures and herald explosions for near-screen clear. Activate Charged Staff on cooldown to maintain charges.

Why ~100% crit + massive AoE + minimal inputs = the nuke feel. This is the core mapping loop.

3

Bossing Setup - Flicker Strike Weapon Swap

Weapon Set 2 - Boss Links
  • Flicker Strike (main skill)
  • Perpetual Charge
  • Overextend / Ambrosia (damage)
  • Inevitable Critical + Excise (crit)
  • Garukhan's Resolve
  • Infernal Cry (add separately)
Set 2 Weapon Slot
  • Rattling Sceptre (skeletons for charge gen)
  • Redblade Banner
Pre-Boss Rotation
  1. 1 Swap to Weapon Set 2 (Rattling Sceptre + Redblade Banner)
  2. 2 Cast Profane Ritual on skeletons to generate power charges
  3. 3 Activate Charged Staff
  4. 4 Swap back to Weapon Set 1 (Storm Wave staff)
  5. 5 Enter boss arena and start Flickering

Why Flicker one-taps T4 pinnacles with pre-loaded charges. Avoids using Flicker in packs where teleport behavior causes deaths.

4

Gear Priorities

Slot Priority Stats
Weapon High phys + ele damage on attacks, +melee gem levels, 11%+ base crit. Use Crit Damage Soul Core rune.
Body Armour ES/Evasion hybrid. Prioritize max ES and spirit.
Gloves Attack speed, lightning damage.
Boots Movement speed, resists.
Helm / Amulet Crit chance. This is where you close the cap.
Belt Shavronne's Satchel with instant flask or Olroth's for ES flasking + recharge.
Ring Unset Ring for extra gem socket.
Jewels Mana on kill (mandatory), ES, crit. Heart of the Well for rage.

Target stats: 9k+ ES, crit capped via tree + gear, chaos and DoT immunity.

5

Defenses and Sustain

  • Stack ES (recharge delay ~2s), evasion, and all resists.
  • Use Convalescence or similar for instant ES recharge on demand.
  • Flask multiple times with Shavronne's for big ES recovery after hits.
  • Avoid stuns and ailments via passive nodes and gear suffixes.

Why Makes the build tanky enough for juiced T15s and T4 content. ES recharge on a 2-second delay means brief repositioning after large hits keeps you full.

Key Decision Points

Invoker vs. other ascendancies?
Stick with Invoker. Unbound Avatar gives boss burst, and the lightning/crit synergy is unmatched for this style. Martial Artist is viable but builds more around Tempest Bell/illusions and is less "nuke"-focused.
Storm Wave vs. Flicker everywhere?
Use Storm Wave in all maps - safe, consistent, screen-wide clear. Reserve Flicker exclusively for bosses. Flicker in packs teleports you into dangerous positions and causes deaths. Do not try to clear with Flicker.
Spirit slots are tight - what to drop?
Use an Unset Ring for the extra socket. If still spirit-limited, drop one Herald (keep Herald of Ash over Thunder if you have to pick) or drop Precision. Charged Staff and Profane Ritual are mandatory - do not cut those.
How do I sustain power charges without dying first?
The Rattling Sceptre generates skeletons automatically. Cast Profane Ritual on them before entering the boss zone. Pair with Heart of the Well jewel or talismans for rage. The pre-boss rotation (Step 3) front-loads all your charges safely.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

X

Using Flicker Strike in packs. You teleport into dangerous mob clusters and die. Flicker is a boss skill only.

X

Skipping mana on kill jewels. Mana sustain collapses without them mid-map. This is not optional - socket at least one before doing red maps.

X

Not investing in crit chance. Non-crits deal almost no damage on Flicker. If you are not critting consistently, you are doing a fraction of your damage on bosses.

X

Skipping the pre-boss charge rotation. Going into a boss without pre-loaded power charges means your first Flickers hit for almost nothing. Always do the Rattling Sceptre ritual first.

X

Tanking hits instead of repositioning. ES recharge has a 2-second delay. After a large hit, step back for 2 seconds before going back in. Standing in damage while waiting for recharge kills you.

X

Carrying PoE1 combo-building instincts. This is a pure crit nuke. Ignore old habits around combo openers. Spam Storm Wave, manage charges, and swap for bosses.
