Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5 Mercenary

Mercenary League Starter Guide

Get through the campaign fast with Grenade builds — the top Mercenary league starter in 0.5. Explosive + Gas Grenades clear packs, pin enemies, and scale on any crossbow. Tactician is the safest ascendancy choice for beginners and veterans alike.

Beginner Friendly SSF Viable Tactician Recommended Crossbow Build Grenade Rotation
Core Strategy

Roll into range, pre-place grenades, then finish with crossbow shots. Explosive Grenade is your main DPS — pair with Gas Grenade for clouds that detonate for massive AoE. Use Flash Grenade to stun/pin enemies before you commit. Tactician's pin mechanic keeps enemies locked in place while you unload. Never stand still — keep moving, drop grenades ahead of enemy paths, and use Pounce for mobility.

Campaign Leveling Steps

1
Act 1 — Early Setup (Levels 1–14)
Getting the grenade core online
  • Start with Fragmentation Rounds + basic Crossbow Shot
  • Grab first Uncut Skill Gem in The Clearfell — take Frost Bomb for elemental exposure on bosses
  • Pick up Explosive Grenade as soon as it's available — this is your main clear skill for the whole campaign
  • Add Flash Grenade for stuns and crowd control before committing to a pack
  • Pre-place grenades ahead of enemy paths, accounting for fuse delay — don't throw them directly at feet
2
Acts 2–4 — Full Grenade Rotation
Core skill setup and rotation
Pack Clear
Flash Grenade to stun/pin the pack
Gas Grenade to create a cloud on the pack
Explosive Grenade to detonate — massive AoE chain
Oil Grenade for Exposure/slow on heavy targets
Boss
Pre-stack grenades, Flash Grenade to pin/stun
Cluster Grenade for high burst during the pin window
Mark of Siphoning for mana sustain on hit

Crossbow Upgrades — Always Priority #1
Upgrade path every act
  • Crossbow base damage directly multiplies all grenade damage — upgrade constantly
  • Upgrade path: Varnished → Alloy → Robust Crossbow → Bombard (available at level 33+)
  • Use Artificer's Orbs and Runes for flat damage on your crossbow. Gamble vendors for upgrades
  • In The Redvale: knock over weapon piles for a guaranteed Tense Crossbow boost
  • Save strong orbs (Regal / Alch / Exalt) for late Act 2+ or weapon/jewelry — don't waste on Act 1 gear
4
Gear Priorities
What to look for on every slot
  • Crossbow: highest base damage available, flat/added damage, then attack speed
  • Gloves and rings: flat/added damage (physical and elemental)
  • All other gear: Life, Resistances (cap at 75%), Armour/Evasion (Tactician uses both)
  • Boots: movement speed always — upgrade every 1–2 acts
  • Flasks: upgrade Life Flask and Mana Flask every 1–2 acts without exception
5
Into Maps — Early Endgame
What to focus at campaign end
  • Cap all elemental resistances before entering maps — act bosses in Acts 5–6 will punish uncapped resists
  • Continue grenade setup or transition based on your Ascendancy pick
  • League mechanic nodes provide early currency and gear — prioritize first atlas passive points
  • Focus: more damage on crossbow, life/defenses on all other slots

Ascendancy Choice

Alternative
Witchhunter

Higher damage ceiling vs specific enemy types. More offense-focused. Better for experienced players who know the campaign well. Fewer defensive layers than Tactician.

Alternative
Gemling Legionnaire

Flexible skill scaling via gem bonuses. Higher ceiling for builds that want to stack specific skills. More complex to execute — not recommended for first Mercenary playthrough.

Key Decision Points

Explosive Grenade or Gas + Explosive combo?
Explosive + Gas combo is more forgiving for most situations. Gas cloud detonation hits harder and has a larger blast radius. Use Explosive alone only on fast single targets where Gas doesn't have time to form.
When to detonate Gas Grenade manually?
Learn the fuse timing to let Gas detonate naturally for maximum effect. Alternatively, use Explosive Shot for instant pops — useful on fast-moving bosses where you need burst on demand.
SSF or Trade?
Self-found works great — the grenade build scales off crossbow base damage, which drops frequently. Trade speeds up crossbow upgrades significantly and is worth it if you want faster map progression.
Respec to a different ascendancy later?
Respec is possible and relatively cheap. Start with Tactician for safe campaign progression, then respec to Witchhunter or Gemling at maps if you want a different playstyle.

Common Mistakes

Ignoring crossbow upgrades
Your DPS tanks without crossbow upgrades. Check vendors constantly — a 2-act-old crossbow cripples all your grenade damage.
Poor mana management
Grenades cost significant mana. Upgrade Mana Flask every 1–2 acts, use Mark of Siphoning for on-hit recovery, and keep Pounce for mobility/sustain.
Standing still while throwing grenades
Keep moving constantly — roll/strafe while dropping grenades. Pre-place grenades ahead of enemy paths rather than throwing at your feet.
Neglecting Life Flask and resist upgrades
Act bosses (especially Act 4+) deal heavy elemental damage. Uncapped resists or an outdated Life Flask will kill you on boss mechanics.
Throwing all grenades at once, then running dry
Stagger your grenade usage. Flash first to pin, then Gas + Explosive. Saving Flash Grenade for dangerous packs vs blowing all charges on trash.
