Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5

Monk League Starter Build Guide

Get through the campaign smoothly and push into T15+ maps using the Martial Artist ascendancy. Whirling Assault + Tempest Bell is the top Monk setup for 0.5 - low gear requirements, strong AoE, fun playstyle.

Campaign Smooth T15+ Maps Viable Martial Artist Ascendancy Quarterstaff Build Low Gear Requirement
Core Goal

Reach maps fast with minimal trading. Stack elemental damage on a Quarterstaff, manage Power Charges with Tempest Bell, and use Herald of Ice for screen-clear. Choose Martial Artist over Invoker for 0.5 - new Hollow Focus Technique node is a major QoL and damage boost from the start.

01

Campaign Leveling - Act by Act

1
Act 1 Early - Levels 1 to 10
Character setup and basic progression
  • Start Monk - prioritize Dex/Int on passives for skills and evasion
  • Grab a basic Quarterstaff from vendors immediately
  • Pick up Killing Palm skill gem from Miller quest reward
  • Focus vendor finds on: life, movement speed, and elemental resists
  • Use vendor regex to speed up shopping:
    (10|15)% i.+mov|ph.*da|\d cfl.+da|^\+.*ills$|^\+.*ng sp.*ls$
2
Mid Act 1 to Act 3 - Main Skill Setup
Core damage and defensive foundations
  • Swap to Whirling Assault as main clear skill (or Ice Strike if you prefer Invoker)
  • Add support gems as they drop or become available from quests
  • Use Tempest Bell on bosses and rare packs - drop it, hit it
  • Generate Power Charges via Killing Palm combo on bells
  • Stack flat elemental damage on gloves and weapon (not just %, flat matters most early)
  • Target: 75% all elemental resists by Act 3 end - die without this in Act 4+
3
Ascendancy - Martial Artist Node Order
Trials of Ascendancy unlock priority
1ST
Hollow Focus Technique
Bells, charges, and QoL - biggest early impact in 0.5. Take this immediately.
2ND
Way of the Stonefist
Main damage node. Pair with gloves rolled with flat phys + elemental damage.
3RD
Defensive node (Runic Meridians)
Take if you need more resist coverage - flex slot.
4
Acts 3 to 6 - Mid Campaign
Gear priorities and weapon slot usage
  • Stick with Quarterstaff or transition to unarmed/Hollow Palm if you want budget alternative
  • Prioritize gear affixes: +melee skill levels, attack speed, crit chance, elemental damage
  • Use second weapon slot for Rend or Talisman - weapon swap for tough fights for burst
  • Maintain Power Charges for Charged Staff / Falling Thunder secondary skills
  • Upgrade weapon first if DPS feels low - bad weapon is the #1 reason for slow clear
5
End of Campaign - Map Ready
Final checklist before entering maps
  • All elemental resists capped at 75%
  • Push Energy Shield or Life to comfortable survival threshold
  • Get a Quarterstaff with elemental damage prefixes and +skill levels if possible
  • Add Herald of Ice - this provides the screen-clear explosions on frozen kill
  • Rotation: spam Whirling Assault, drop Bell on bosses, manage charges, Herald clears trash
Combat Rotation
01 Spam Whirling Assault - main clear skill, keep moving
02 Drop Tempest Bell on bosses and tough rares - then hit it
03 Killing Palm on bells to generate and maintain Power Charges
04 Herald of Ice auto-procs on frozen kills - explodes nearby enemies
05 Weapon swap for Rend buff on difficult bosses if you have the setup

Common Mistakes to Avoid

!
Ignoring elemental resists
Act 3+ enemies deal heavy elemental damage. One-shots happen constantly without 75% capped resists. Always check resists before progressing to the next act.
!
Poor Power Charge management
Your damage drops significantly without active charges. Practice the Killing Palm on bells rotation early and don't skip it on boss fights.
!
Using a low-DPS weapon
A weak Quarterstaff is the single biggest reason campaign feels slow. Check vendors often, use the regex tip. Upgrade weapon before any other slot.
!
Overcomplicating the setup before maps
Keep the skill setup simple during the campaign. Don't chase complex interactions until you're in maps and understand the base mechanics.
!
Mana issues from flask mismanagement
Certain item mods can break mana sustain. Watch your flask uptime and avoid mods that interact poorly with your mana pool size.
