Dungeon Settlers Red Monster Rat: Main Quest 8 Guide
Find and kill the Red Monster Rat on Floor 2 to complete Main Quest 8. Prep your squad, pack backup melee on archers, focus fire the elite, and extract before durability runs out.
Core goal: Find and kill the Red Monster Rat on Floor 2 so Main Quest 8 completes, without wiping, running out of arrows mid-fight, or dying on the way out. Players keep hitting the same wall: they treat it like a normal rat, send two bow users with empty quivers, and either wipe on Hard or kill it and then struggle to extract.
1Prep Before You Leave Camp
- 1Finish Main Quest 7 first.
Build the wood Goddess Statue and get two members to level 2 or higher. Quest 8 does not start until that is done. Players who rush Floor 2 early still fight the rat, but the quest flag is the kill after Quest 7.
- 2Equip every archer with a melee weapon.
This is the tip players repeat most. Two bow users burned their arrows, then had to finish the rat and extract on melee they were not set up for. Put a backup club, spear, or sword on every ranged settler.
- 3Pack extra wooden arrows and food.
The fight plus the walk back is what drains you. One player killed it with arrows gone and "effectively three people" and called it easier than expected once they committed, but only because they did not wipe on empty quivers.
- 4Craft what you need before the hunt.
The red rat sometimes drops bones and sometimes does not. Do not assume you can craft meds or gear after the fight. Craft before you leave camp.
2Find and Kill the Red Monster Rat
- 1Go to Floor 2 of the first dungeon (the forest, Veil of Silence), not Floor 1.
Multiple players report the kill on 2F. That is the floor you should be hunting.
- 2Treat it as an elite, not a grey rat.
On Hard, players get deleted if they walk in as if it were tutorial trash. Pause, focus fire the red one, and do not let the swarm peel your frontliner while bows tickle it.
- 3Kill it, loot, then leave.
Several posts are "we killed 2F rat, now extract." Do not push deeper on the same run if durability and ammo are gone. Completing the quest is the kill, not a full floor clear.
Key Decisions
| Situation | What to Do |
|---|---|
| Two people not level 2 yet | Go back and level. The rat will still be on 2F later. Do not rush. |
| No spare melee on archers | Go back and craft. Running archers with no backup melee is the most common wipe cause. |
| Playing on Hard and struggling | Drop difficulty for this fight if you only care about clearing Quest 8. Hard first-timers report dying and choosing continue, reload, or new save. |
| Killed the rat, tempted to push deeper | Go home and re-gear. Second-region Floor 2 is described as worse than this rat. Do not treat this kill as ready for the next dungeon. |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Sending a dual-archer party with no backup melee. Arrows run out, then you are stuck finishing an elite on weapons you are not set up for.
- Assuming bones and meds will drop so you can craft after the fight. The red rat sometimes drops bones and sometimes does not. Craft before the hunt.
- Confusing this kill with unlocking the next region. Players who beat the red rat still bounce off later floors. The quest is just the story beat.
- Staying to mop extra rooms after ammo and durability are spent. Kill, loot, extract. Do not push deeper on the same run.
